The name comes from an archaic colony of bacteria that transform into rocks over the course of millions of years. They are said to be the planet's oldest life forms, of which, a number of colonies remain alive today in the bays of Western Australia. The idea that this grouping of circles suggests is a growth structure, halfway between the mineral and the animal, like the coral reefs.
